Sonia creates art that is rich in detail and fine craftsmanship. Working with a variety of different materials and approaches, the work featured here includes examples of her watercolor paintings, jewelry and mosaics.
Compositional elegance and excellent craftsmanship are qualities inherent in all of Sonia's creations, and her art displays a unique sensitivity for pattern and design. This is especially evident in her jewelry creations that are characterized by a dynamic interplay of materials, colors and textures, all beautifully integrated into well balanced designs. Her jewelry creations explore a range of approaches, from working with wire and paper to building tiny quilt like constructions that incorporate beads and realistic imagery. In her wire necklaces she combines wire with paper and resolves them within a strong symmetry; the individual wire and paper "unit forms" making up the necklaces are carefully composed.
In contrast to the strong symmetry characterizing her wire and paper pieces, Sonia's sewn jewelry explores asymmetric compositions. A particularly outstanding example of her asymmetrically composed work is the pendant with the little red bird positioned on the left-hand side. Not only does the placement of the bird contribute to the energy of the piece, but extending the bird's legs beyond the pendant's perimeter further amplifies the pendant's dynamic quality and charm.
Sonia's art is the expression of a strong and original artistic voice, and her work is always engaging and wonderful to see.
