Karen's talents as an artist extend not only to jewelry making, but also to the art of watercolor painting. Therefore in selecting her as the Artist of the Month for April, I decided to feature both her watercolor paintings and her jewelry creations.
In her jewelry, Karen's beaded assemblages are rich in color and texture. Every piece she creates is beautifully crafted with all elements integrated into harmonious compositional structures. Beaded lines of color and pattern flow throughout her pieces, interrelating and combining to form dynamic patterns and textural contrasts that are expressive of uniquely syncopated visual rhythms.
Karen's watercolor paintings show an artist in command of technical expertise and poetic vision. Her paintings are evocative of quiet places in which she captures the essence of a scene without overworking the subject. Karen is sensitive to the unique properties of watercolor painting, and employs the medium with sensitivity and skill to paraphrase her subjects using transparent washes of beautifully luminous colors. One of my personal favorites is the landscape painting featured here. The piece is beautifully composed within a clearly articulated picture space that gradually guides the viewer from the cool colors of the background, to a foreground rich in vibrant fall colors.
